As March is National Endometriosis awareness month, I wanted to give some insight on how acupuncture can help its treatment. Endometriosis is a chronic condition whereby endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus and attaches to other organs in the pelvic region. Side effects include pain, heavy menstrual bleeding, inflammation, and can impact fertility.
The standard treatment with western medicine focuses on pain reduction through the use of NSAIDS (Advil or Tylenol) followed by hormone therapy, surgery and in severe cases a partial or complete hysterectomy.
Fortunately Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine is a natural, noninvasive approach that is less risky, less costly, and has fewer side effects. Acupuncture can help to reduce pain, shrink growths, and works to help prevent further growth of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus.
Because endometriosis is complicated and chronic, generally women need to come to regular acupuncture appointments to manage this condition and continue to prevent further pain and flair ups.
