What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) technique that has been practiced for more than two thousand years.  It’s based on the concept of a vital energy, or Qi (pronounced ch-eee) network that circulates through meridian systems and energy pathways though out the body.  When Qi stagnates or a meridian imbalance occurs, pain or disease may arise.  Acupuncture techniques are used to unblock and/or mobilize Qi by inserting needles at particular points on the body to harmonize and balance these meridian systems.  This is a safe and effective treatment that stimulates the body’s own innate healing abilities to bring it back into balance.

The body forms dis-harmonies as a result of the various physical and mental stresses of daily life such as trauma, overwork, inadequate rest, improper diet, environmental pollution, bacteria, viruses, and excess emotional stress and worry. The goal of acupuncture is to not only eliminate or alleviate symptoms, but to treat the underlying cause or condition and improve the overall quality of life. Because of this holistic approach, no two acupuncture treatments are alike. An individualized treatment plan will be formulated based on your unique needs.

Although a healing modality practiced since ancient times, modern research shows that acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters that promote circulation and hormonal balance as well as reducing pain and inflammation and boosting immunity.  Through continuous treatments, acupuncture helps the body return to its natural healthy state.

What Does Treatment Look Like?

Upon insertion, Acupuncture causes Qi to gather at the points that are needled. Sensations can also sometimes be felt in other parts of the body which seem unrelated, but are actually areas where meridians and energetic pathways flow.  The sensation of Qi can feel like an achiness, warmth, or slight tingling at the point.

Don’t let the fear of needles turn you away.  Acupuncture needles are hair-thin and practitioners are trained extensively on insertion technique to create a comfortable and relaxing experience. The needles used are FDA approved, sterile, disposable, non-toxic and single-use.
